Program Summary

Located just miles from the famous South Beach, Mount Sinai Medical Center is home to the only Emergency Medicine residency program in Miami Beach. Since its establishment in 1998, the program has grown tremendously. We moved to a new ED in 2019 and have an ultrasound fellowship program as well. Our faculty have diverse experiences and different areas of expertise which allows residents to explore multiple interests. With a relatively small cohort of 21 residents, faculty and residents become close with each other, resulting in a family-like culture. Thanks to our location in a travel hot-spot, we encounter patients from all over the world. As such, our residents play a vital role in providing healthcare not only to the local community but also to a diverse and international population.

Program Location

Miami Beach is everything you’ve heard about… and more. Home to 90,000 people, Miami Beach is one of the most popular travel destinations in the United States. With its year-round warm weather, long stretches of coastline, and abundance of entertainment options, it’s not hard to understand why. We live where you vacation, and the things that you can do are endless.

Enjoy a relaxing day at the beach or get your sweat on with a jog on the boardwalk. Go window shopping on the famous Lincoln Road or cruise down Ocean Drive in an expensive rental car. Take an Art Deco tour of Miami Beach to fully appreciate the area's signature architecture. Grab a bite in one of the fine dining restaurants in the city or pop in to one of the local favorites. Rent a boat or a jet ski and have some fun in the water.

If you’re bored of Miami Beach, cross the bridge into Miami to explore Wynwood, Brickell, or the Design District. Go kayaking, fishing, or bike riding at any of the nearby outdoor recreational areas. Multiple national parks, the Florida Keys, and Disney World are short drives away. Flights to the Caribbean and Latin America are quick, plentiful, and cheap. If you’re still not tired after a whole day of activities, take advantage of Miami Beach’s nightlife and keep the party going.

FAQS

FAQS

How many residents are in your program?

21 - 7 residents per class

How many shifts per 4 week block do you do? Are your night shifts grouped?

19 (PGY1) / 18 (PGY2) / 17 (PGY3). Night shifts are grouped whenever possible.

How long are shifts?

Typically 10 hours.

On Wednesdays, shifts are shorter due to conference (6 hours during the day and 8 hours for the night shift).

On weekends, shifts are 12 hours in an effort to give residents 2 weekends off per block.

What other residencies / fellowships are in the hospital?

Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, General Surgery, OBGYN, Pathology, Podiatry, Psychiatry, Urology, Radiology, Critical Care.

Who gets priority on procedures?

We do. We typically do not call consults until there have been multiple failed attempts or the patient requires specialist intervention emergently. Most senior residents begin giving away procedures by the time they start second year.

What is your patient population like?

We have a very diverse patient population as Miami Beach has a sizeable Jewish community, a large Spanish-speaking population, and a robust LGBTQIA+ community. Since Miami Beach is also a popular tourist destination, we see people from all over the world. Our proximity to the Caribbean and Latin America means that we sometimes encounter diseases more frequently seen in those areas of the world such as COVID, tuberculosis, Zika, dengue fever, malaria, and chikungunya. We see many elderly patients with multiple comorbidities due to the number of nursing homes in the area and the influx of part-time Floridians in the colder months. South Beach is also known as a party destination so we encounter many patients under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

What is the trauma exposure like?

We have dedicated trauma rotations that take place at Ryder Trauma Center, a stand-alone designated trauma facility and the nation's only surgical training facility for the U.S. Army. Located on the JMH campus, Ryder is staffed by Univ of Miami trauma surgeons and accepts rotating residents from EM and surgery programs nationwide, including local programs like ourselves and JMH. In addition to this incredible trauma exposure, Mount Sinai residents gain additional trauma exposure within our own facility. As an independent hospital on the beach, without a trauma center on campus to divert patients, our ED frequently manages trauma patients that present as walk-in patients independently or whom have been mis-triaged by EMS. These patients require emergent management and stabilization which is performed solely by our ED physicians, and once stabilized they are either transferred/admitted.

How is conference structured?

Conferences occur Wednesdays from 7a-12p. We begin core content discussion with a provided breakfast. Each week content differs, ranging from resident, guest, or faculty lectures, small group oral boards, evidence-based medicine review, and monthly morbidity and mortality presentation. We have frequent simulation acitvities including simulation cases or procedure labs, with an emphasis on leadership and communication skills and procedural competency.

What are the residency application requirements?

Seven positions are offered at Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program each year. Our program participates and accepts applications only through ERAS. In addition, your application will only be considered if you are enrolled in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). You must contact your medical school for delivery of your application, transcripts, Dean’s Letter, and faculty recommendations to our program via the Internet.

A completed application will contain the following:

  1. ERAS common application

  2. MSPE/Dean’s Letter

  3. Letters of Recommendation (At least 1 SLOE, preferably 2)

  4. USMLE and/or COMLEX score reports

  5. Medical school transcripts

  6. Personal statement

Application deadlines comply with those of ERAS. If selected for an interview, you will be notified via email.

How do I apply for a rotation as a medical student?

We currently accept applications through VSLO. You can submit an application through that site, and we will hopefully find a time period that matches your availability!
