Welcome to your Emergency Medicine rotation at Mount Sinai Medical Center. We are your EM clerkship team!

Clerkship Director Dr. Nicole Warren (center). Clerkship Coordinators Dr. Sarah Zajd (left) and Dr. Joseph McShannic (right).

We look forward to meeting you and working with you. We’ve worked hard to make your rotation accessible, educational, and unforgettable. Like any rotation, you will get out of it what you put into it. Make sure to show up on time, take initiative, work hard, take ownership of your patients, ask questions, keep your ears open, and learn as we love to teach!

Please read through this entire page as it entails pretty much all you need to know for your month with us, including requirements and resources necessary for your rotation. Watch our orientation video prior to arrival as it provides a quick intro to who we are, how to navigate through the ED, where to go for shifts, and where important things are located within the ED such as suture cart, ortho cart, crash carts, etc.

REQUIREMENTS

ATTENDANCE & EVALUATIONS

On the Rotations Resources page, you will find details on how to make your own schedule! (yes you read that right! you get to make your own schedule!) Fill it out ASAP as the schedule fills up quickly. The schedule includes other required events, such as weekly ED Conference and our monthly Sinai SIM Day. In addition to your attendance, we require you to maintain an attendance & procedure log, as well as to ask for evaluations from attendings and residents in the ED throughout your rotation. See below for further details.

  • Wednesday Conference: 7-8 medical student lecture from core faculty and senior residents, 8-12 EM residency conference. Attendance is required for all Wednesdays throughout your scheduled rotation. If you cannot attend, email msmcemstudents@gmail.com prior to conference date, otherwise it will be marked as an unexcused absence.

  • Attendance/Procedure Log: You will log and record your shift attendance and ample procedures performed during your ED rotation. Listed procedures are required, additional procedures may be added. Every shift, your attendance and all procedures must be signed by your overseeing resident and/or attending (preferably the resident you worked with the most). Print one copy prior to arrival.

  • Evaluation of Student: Ongoing feedback from senior resident and faculty during your ED shift and daily evaluation occurs via QR code posted in the ED. To receive diverse feedback, it is recommended that you make an effort to work with as many different residents and attendings as possible.

EDUCATION

On the Rotation Resources page, you will find a wide range of online resources, including FOAM resources, a guide to POCUS and US equipment, airway articles, and more. Some are required, others are optional; however, all should be supplemental to your own learning.

  • FOAM Resources: This document contains a wide range of online resources, such as blogs, podcasts, videos, and social media platforms, that share evidence-based medical knowledge, clinical cases, research findings, and educational content. These are required to be completed by ALL rotating students.

  • Other Resources: Additional resources listed are optional, though encouraged.

END OF ROTATION SUBMISSIONS

On the Rotation Resources page, you will find the remaining requirements necessary for successful completion of your EM rotation. These include submitting your attendance & procedure log, as well as submitting feedback, which we greatly value.

  • Submit Attendance & Procedure Log: Attendance/Procedure Logs are to be submitted electronically at the end of your rotation and once received, your school evaluation will be completed.

  • Submit School Evaluation: NOVA students may submit school evaluation requests through the LEO website. Other students may submit school evaluations electronically at the end of your rotation.

  • Submit Rotation Feedback: At the end of your rotation, we encourage you to submit anonymous feedback regarding your rotation experience, as we are constantly working to improve the rotation to better help students like you.

  • Submit Resident/Attending Feedback: At any point throughout your rotation, we encourage you to provide anonymous feedback regarding any resident or attending.

EXPECTATIONS

Arrive to each shift 10-15 min early, introduce yourself to the residents and attendings, and let us know if you’re interested in EM! Be sure to let the resident’s know if it is your first shift so they can give you a tour of our ED in person.

Work with the senior resident during each shift, and kindly avoid working with the interns as we encourage their focus first year to be on appropriately adjusting, procedural competency and patient care.

Keep track of the patients you are involved with and follow up their results.

While in the ED, you are a part of our team. Every student will hopefully have at least 1 or 2 chances to perform CPR. Performing CPR is YOUR role during a code, so no need to ask permission. Take off your white coat (sometimes it’s messy), get gloves, jump in if no one has started, or get in line to be up next.

This will be a great experience for everyone, whether you are interested in emergency medicine or not. If there are any problems or concerns, please don't hesitate to email us or reach out in any way. Lastly, welcome to the ER, we hope you learn a lot and have some fun! We are happy to have you rotate with us and can’t wait to meet you in person!

Now let’s have some fun!!! See You Soon!
